In a recent study on the use of certain medications for hypertension and erectile dysfunction, researchers at Nairobi-based National University Hospital in Kenya found that, for most people, Viagra, the blue pill and other medications were associated with a lower risk of heart disease. The results were published on the front page of theNew England Journal of Medicine.
Researchers examined blood samples taken from all four patients who were taking sildenafil, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. They found that Viagra and sildenafil were more likely to be associated with cardiovascular disease than other drugs, including angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), which are generally considered to be safer choices for people with cardiovascular disease.
"The results of our study show that there is a direct association between the use of Viagra and cardiovascular disease risk factors, even when Viagra is not recommended as a first-line treatment," says study author David Pate, M. D., associate professor in the Department of Cardiology at NUH and director of the Division of Cardiology at the University of Nairobi, and principal investigator for the study.
"Our study found that a low dose of sildenafil was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease risk factors than the dose used for angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), such as diltiazem, which is often used for hypertension. These findings were further supported by a recent study," he adds.
Viagra, which is available by prescription only, is typically taken in a pill or with food. However, the drug is generally taken for more than six hours. This allows patients to see what the drug does and what it can cause. Sildenafil, which is sold under the brand name Tadalafil, is also prescribed in a similar way to Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction.
The research team found that, of all the drugs, tadalafil was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease risk factors than all other drugs, including ARBs. The risk of cardiovascular disease risk factors was more pronounced among the tadalafil group than among the other drugs.
"Our study shows that there is a direct association between the use of sildenafil and cardiovascular disease risk factors even when sildenafil is not recommended as a first-line treatment for patients with cardiovascular disease, even though sildenafil is not recommended as a first-line treatment for these patients," adds study author Paul R. Baeza, M. D., associate professor in the Department of Cardiology at NUH and director of the Division of Cardiology at the University of Nairobi, and a principal investigator for the study.

• Seizure medication:- carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin and primidone
• Heart or blood pressure medication:- disopyramide, amiodarone, quinidine and procainamide
• Anti-viral medication:- telaprevir, atazanavir, retonavir, indinavir, saquinavir and cobicistat
• Recreational drugs:- amyl nitrate (poppers)
